7th Grade STEM Field Trip

Taylorville Junior High School’s 7th grade STEM class is studying energy and the environment. In this unit, Mrs. Wagner’s students will be investigating different types of energy sources including fossil fuels, solar and wind energy.  Friday September 15, the class visited the local Christian County Coal Mine Museum. Mr. Chuck Martin spoke to the students about the history of coal and coal mining in Christian County. The students learned about many of the tools and artifacts on display and toured the replica of a coal mine tunnel. Some of the students found family members on the Coal Miners’ Wall of Fame. Others were excited to learn about the Mine Wars of 1932-35 that happened in the area. “I am so happy that the kids liked it! My own kids and I enjoyed the museum when we visited this summer and I wanted to share it with my students. We are lucky to have this opportunity in town. Mr. Martin and the Board of Directors really have put together a nice collection.” At the end of the visit, Mr. Martin gave each student a bag with some Coal and Fluorspar, compliments of the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals.
